OkMap is an interactive software which allows you to work on your computer screen with digital maps that you have either bought or scanned. OkMap can also import vectorial data from the most common formats and DEM data relevant to height information. Data collected by your GPS can be downloaded on your computer, stored and displayed on the maps. They can also be used to create different types of statistics. By connecting a GPS to your laptop, you can plot your position on maps in real-time. If you are connected to the network you can constantly send your position to a remote computer, or receive the position of your companions on your computer and display the related tracks on maps in real time.

ProsOnce upon a time, I could download images from the Google Earth server, write UTM grid lines on them, and use the resulting prints with my GPS as a base for my geologic explorations of some volcanoes in Mexico. Somebody who is not a geologist cannot imagine how much easier field geology is (was) with OKMap. THAT was one of the reasons the Google Earth people were given an award at the 2011 Geological Society of America annual meeting. I only hope there are some cultural map servers that do for other users what the Google server used to do for me.
ConsGoogle rescinded the OKMap api key within weeks of them getting the GSA award thereby ruining its usefulness, at least by me. I think the award should be rescinded, as well. Trying to use the photos without the UTM grid last week was maddening and when you're lost on a lava flow, you're really lost!
SummaryOKMap was a great donationware program but, alas, it depended on other people and the other people turned out to be EVIL.
