SmartPower is particularly suited to Windows Home Servers, torrent or download boxes, and HTPCs. SmartPower is a Windows service that saves energy by hibernating and resuming your Windows PC according to configurable rules. The SmartPower configuration utility lets you create rules that prevent this happening. When SmartPower sees that no rules currently apply it will initiate hibernate (or suspend, or shutdown).

"Better than a simple auto-off countdown timer"

ProsAn excellent alternative to auto-off programs. Configurable according to how your computer is operating. Can shut off computer by CPU threshold use, downloading activity, etc. Will leave computer on if certain programs or processes are running; you define what these are.
ConsMay be a bit more complicated to configure for those want something simpler. Software name could be better as people could easily overlook it.
SummaryI tried lots of "auto-off" PC programs, but they all essentially all did the same thing--turn off your computer at a set time. But what I needed was an auto shutdown program that was smart enough to shut down the computer *after* it was finished downloading a file or running a program such as a virus scan or graphics rendering program.SmartPower does all these things and much more. You can configure it in so many different ways that it's hard to believe that it's free. It's great when you have to leave your computer unattended to finish up what it needs to do, and know that it will shut down afterwards. Great!
