"Works but is Junk for renaming"

February 15, 2015
 |
By Maverick_Wolfe

 |
Version: TagScanner 5.1.657

ProsWorks as advertised to a point, and is EXTREMELY fast.
ConsNo US/UK English transliteration files within the software, will not properly rename files for you into US/UK English because there is not a proper file or programming to do so.
SummaryHalf a star because this program Literally destroyed HOURS worth of Downloaded music I use for DJ work. I will now have to re-download all of my music to my laptop just to fix this problem.

"Did the trick!"

December 29, 2014
 |
By WhomIMayBe

Version: TagScanner 5.1.657

ProsAllows me to adjust the tags for first song on an album then copy just the common tags to the remainder of the songs. Genius!
Allows tags to be extracted from the file names. The tags don't have to be separated by any particular character, it seems to be able to figure it out just telling it what tags are embedded and what order they appear.
Easy to rename files using Album-song or any combo of tags. renamed all of mine so they are all consistently named.
If stuck, you can search for missing tags from external databases. It takes a few minutes and I don't always agree with the genre so I try not to do this more than necessary. In one case the artist and album name were missing but the songs were all there. It managed to find the missing info by matching the song titles... smart!
ConsIts not very intuitive. Unless you are accustom to working with databases or still remember some of the command formats in DOS you may have to glance over the instructions (available on TagScanners web site).
SummaryI FOUND NO TRACE OF UNWANTED PROGRAMS OR CHROME APPS. Perhaps the download has been fixed.
There is a newer version on tagscanners web site. Not sure why Cnet doesn't automatically download this more recent version. It will suggest installing the newer version the first time you run the program.

"MALWARE SCAM!"

October 29, 2013

 |
Version: TagScanner 5.1.638

ProsIf you are a digital Commando, and love to battle MALWARE, VIRUSES, REGISTRY SABOTAGE AND ATTEMPTS TO COMPROMISE YOUR SECURITY, then this is the download for you!
Cons5 minute battle to stop this SCAMWARE from connecting to the internet, during installation. It tried various tricks using various sub-programs.Despite declining ALL OFFERS, three unwanted programs and a toolbar were installed.Following an emergency restart found 54 new Registry problems; INCLUDING A CLEAR ATTEMPT TO COMPROMISE FIREWALL!!!Then 10 (Yes TEN!) viruses found by an immediate virus scan!!!
SummaryThis freeware is FULL of SCAMWARE!!!Developers who do these things deserve ALL THE BAD LUCK THAT THEY BRING ON THEMSELVES!!!They are clearly worthless and penniless FOR A REASON!C.NET and DOWNLOAD.COM should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.Any guarantees of trustworthiness HAVE NOW ALL GONE STRAIGHT OUT THE WINDOW!I used you & trusted you for years. WHAT HAS HAPPENED?I'm not sure you'll EVER BE SEEING ME AGAIN.

"Great Software!"

October 01, 2013
 |
By Mista808

 |
Version: TagScanner 5.1.638

ProsIt does everything it says it will do. Works great. And it's FREE! Not just a trial. 100% FREE!
ConsThe only cons are the fact that if you don't pay attention while clicking through the install menus, it will install bloatware that you will not need. If people would just pay attention and do a "custom" install and hit "decline" for each of the bloated software trying to install. Then you are perfectly fine. So basically there are 0 cons. Anyone who says there are cons are simply unaware of how to read and avoid installing software they don't need. READ PEOPLE!Otherwise have fun keeping IT guys like me in business.
SummaryGreat software. A+

"Current version bloated with deceptive software"

September 24, 2013
 |
By steveddr

 |
Version: TagScanner 5.1.638

ProsEverything installed EXCEPT the program I wanted. I didn't try reinstalling after all the hoops I had to jump through to get rid of the bad stuff that was installed.
ConsI had a previous version that worked well, so I had my guard down. Despite declining all optional downloads and foolishly proceeding with installation of other required programs, everything I DIDN'T want was installed. I had to remove programs via control panel, run Malwarebytes to remove registry keys and other bad stuff, manually reset settings in Chrome and Internet Explorer, and do a complete uninstall and reinstall of Firefox. This program completely wasted an hour of my life.
SummaryAvoid Tagscanner like the plague. If you did not see these bad reviews before installing, please submit your own review and report the problem to Cnet.

"Unwanted extra software"

Version: TagScanner 5.1.638

ProsCons outweigh the pros. Really doesn't do anything better than many other legitimate software programs.
ConsDeceptive software. Installed unwanted software even when I choose not to in the install. CNet needs to eliminate their editors choice for software that does this. TagScanner seems buggy.
SummaryI uninstalled. You shouldn't bother installing.

I could understand your issue if you are forced to instal stuff before you are allowed to use the app or fill out surveys etc but there are #DECLINE options AND a portable version that doesn't require installing, why didn't you select that instead?

If you are too impatient to bother reading the instal pop ups that's your fault.

"Powerful Tagging Program Met My Needs (& then some)"

August 08, 2013
 |
By sockanasa

 |
Version: TagScanner 5.1.637

Pros1. Very powerful program. By that I mean that it lets you get into the intricacies of tagging files, renaming files, renaming tags, breaking tracks by disc #, auto numbering, re-arranging order, parsing tags to create other tags or file names, etc.2. Preview! For many of the tagging management & mixing, you can press the preview button and a window will generate a full list of all the new values of all the files to be changed. Use this before committing changes to the file as you may pickup something you missed like numbering with no zero spacers when you wanted 2: 01, 02, ... 15.
Cons1. Very powerful program. This program takes some time to mentally process all it can do, especially if you are new to tagging and the different versions. This can be particularly dangerous if you set it off on a task to update all the tracks on your pc and you got at least one change wrong.
SummarySometimes a program can be so flexible that it takes time to learn and haste or not understanding something can cause grave errors. However, for a power user willing to take the time, it is more than worth the time. I'll put it like this: if you like Apple's approach of "anyone can do this" by extremely limiting the users options, then this probably isn't for you because there are so many options & opportunities to screw up. If you are a die hard Linux command prompt type, then perhaps this is to "GUI-fied". But the pc enthusiast in the middle with a willingness to learn (took me about 20 minutes to be dangerous) will find this a powerful medium ground.BTW, this is free. If you find yourself using this program, I believe you should donate to the developers to keep development continuing.Regarding extra spam-ware reviews...No malware, spyware, junkware installed if you read each install window. I installed this using CNET's download & install software. For me, CNET's installer had 3 windows offering to install other software. The first window needed to be unchecked (Ask toolbar). The next two listed user agreements which you could accept or decline. In bold typeface at the top you'll see you are accepting installation of a separate program. Hit "Decline" and the setup moves to the next step. I had 2 windows like this. For those of us who are used to just accepting user agreements w/o reading them, this can be annoying. (I had to kill my install and start over since there's no back button.) but this was part of CNET's installer and not TagScanner's.
