"Horrendous Customer Service"

ProsAbility to backup multiple devices
ConsI think they must be feeling the pressure of their competition. I called with a question about how to downgrade the amount of data that I was using and the person I spoke to in customer service was extremely rude and unhelpful. Choose wisely the size that you need as there is no easy way to downgrade. When I tried to make some suggestions on how they might improve their service the agent became very defensive and hung up on me. I called back and pressed the option for sales and the same person answered! I did not intend to cancel the service when I called, but definitely will not be renewing this service after the way I was treated. It's too bad people get in the way of a decent business model.

ProsThey back up online. Like so many other companies
ConsThey make you sign of for auto renew. (They are expensive), and will NOT refund - ever! Even if you do not use the service.
SummaryIDrive is a ripoff! I signed up for a service with an auto renew. Canceled right after the auto renew. Therefore I did not have any access to the data - they would NOT refund anything. Cost me $500. !

ConsDifficult to get assistance and company auto-enrolls members into higher-tier plans which they charge more for.
SummaryLook at other alternatives. Updated on May 18, 2015Beware of this company. The interface is average and works adequately but they have very poor customer service and questionable business practices.
They auto-enroll members into more expensive plans and will charge them unless they manually opt-out.
It seems on occasion, they also charge members' credit cards without their consent. My CC on file with them expired before my annual plan renewed. After which, my bank issued a new CC with a new expiration date and new CVV number. iDrive charged that CC without my consent. I filed a complaint with the BBB about this, asking for a pro-rated refund from iDrive but they refused. So, I've filed a complaint with my bank, my state's consumer affairs division and my state's Attorney General. It seems unscrupulous that a company can charge a customer's new credit card without their consent.
If you run into similar issues with the company, I recommend filing a complaint with the BBB or contacting your state's Attorney General.

ProsNone - even paid for an upgraded version and it has NEVER been able to back up my Macbook
ConsThis product doesn't work and has dragged my computer to its knees. Even worse, it doesn't show on the list of applications so I am unable to remove it. I repeatedly emailed them to say I did not want to auto renew and to cancel my account, but the link they sent to do so is inoperable and they don't answer their phones. If they worked as hard on improving their service and product as they do in fighting with dissatisfied customers who wish to cancel their account, they might have some potential. I am stuck paying for another year. STAY AWAY!

ProsNONE - They are not customer friendly! They will not help you when you need it!
ConsThey won't cancel my service. Like another reviewer said, you can't do it online, and when you call they treat you rudely, call you "ignorant", and hang up on you without resolving anything.
SummaryDo not sign up for this service. Not worth the $ or headache if you call their supposed customer service. I don't appreciate being argued with, demeaned, disrepected and hung up on. Not to mention the unfprofessional CSR called me ingorant. This is NOT how you run a business.

"Charged for a service that doesn't work"

ConsThe inability to restore files they claim are backed up
SummaryI've been using iDrive for years, but when I had a disk failure on early February and tried to restore my files, I found that I wasn't able to select any files more recent than September 2011. After a long 6 weeks trying to work patiently with IDrive support, they still weren't able to find any way to restore my files and folders (I even suggested sending them a drive to burn them to). All the logs claim that my files were being backed up, but they were unable to prove this was true and it's of no use at all if there's no way to restore them back to my machine.
Despite the fact that I've been paying for a service for well over three years that (unbeknown to me until I came to really need it) hadn't been working due entirely to a fault at their end, iDrive have refused to even give me a refund for this period, never mind any kind of compensation for the loss of the important data I had entrusted them with.
I feel as though I've been totally ripped off by being charged for several years for a service that wasn't actually being provided.
Buyer beware: even if your logs say your iDrive files are being backed up, you might want to check that you're able to restore them otherwise you could be paying for nothing.

ConsSigned up, started first backup. Could not use computer while backup is active. After over 12 hours, only 4% done. A real joke. Emailed i drive customer service for refund and have been ignored for over two weeks now. Started creditcard dispute to try to recover my wasted dough.

ProsSeveral - What this company excels at best is helping you spend your money while efficiently wasting your time.Too, they build a false sense of security, letting you imagine that your data is actually safe and secure somewhere.Additionally, they are masters at 'cut and paste' when it comes to answering questions - using well-worn and hackneyed platitudes to get you to think that something is actually being done to resolve your issues, all the while doing... exactly nothing. Specifically, if you Google the terms 'idrive slow' you will notice that you will get a minimum of 130,000 hits - all with the same ineffectual, repetitive advice - 'send us an error report...'Finally, they assist you in the ageing process, as you slowly become grey and start to prepare to 'shuffle off your mortal coil.' How? By moving your data at a speed that is only measurable in terms of glaciation and tectonic drift. Even dial-up literally screams along compared to this.
ConsBandwidth issues galore - Colossally slow.The on-line version of the application generally runs at between 150-500KB/s. My client's data took THREE WEEKS to seed, and it is just under a terabyte. This is remarkable, because the upload from the ISP is 10MB/s.The Local Backup feature is, weirdly, just as slow. Transferring data to an external drive is, as I write this, running at 500kB/s. I would get better throughput if I was using floppy disks.

"Not user-friendly. Inflexible support on credit charges"

ProsNone that I can think of. Price was what enticed me, but product did not work like other backups I had previously used. Uninstalled it before year expired and went back to previous app, which works like a charm.
ConsOther backups I have used would run auto backups once settings were established. IDrive never would. Every couple weeks I would get a warning email that my PCs were not backed up. So I would go into settings and program for auto backup, then manually do so.
Finally I decided to uninstall and go back to a previous app. I did not cancel, because I received email that my previous credit card had expired and idrive could not renew my acct. So I did nothing. BIG MISTAKE! One month after my acct should have canceled, idrive had somehow accessed the renewed cc and charged it.
To be fair, all of this is listed in their terms of service, but when I called to appeal I was given no consideration, even though I had uninstalled app and had not been backing up for around 60 days (BTW, if you do need to cancel, you may have to call and find out how. Difficult to find on website). If you are not happy with idrive, please go in and cancel, regardless cc status.
SummaryIf product was more user-friendly and auto backup actually worked, I would have renewed. Because of inflexible payment support, I will never return.
