"Slick, but Not Reliable"
February 12, 2014

Version: Moneydance 2010r3
Pros. Clean interface. Fast processing. Easy to categorize. FAST downloads from limited financial institutions. Great opening home screen/page. Good documentation. Quick response from emailing support (once)
Cons. Unknown file structure (to me). Windows expects to open files for input, not folders (as the User's Guide directs). Reports are very sad. No ability to sub categorize transactions across multiple accounts. Restores don't work. Only exports to QIF, tabbed or MoneyDance file types. Reading QIF into other programs failed.. No option to place your file in a specific folder... and instructions are geared towards MAC file systems.
SummaryI was really excited about MoneyDance as a replacement for Quicken. It had potential. The interface took some getting used to but after one week of working with it, it started falling apart. I didn't want to chance bringing in old (potentially corrupt) data from a Quicken export, so I started fresh on February 3 entering (manually) all transactions to date across 1 checking, 5 savings, 13 credit, 4 investment, 2 loan and 6 asset accounts. Did a budget, too. Financial institution downloads we set up and easily done... really fast. Encrypted and backed up the data to a third drive. Wanted to move the main MoneyDance file to a more secure location (following the manual) and that's when I learned the restore process (at least on Windows) is nearly impossible. Spent 9 days working with MoneyDance almost every day about 3 hours a sitting... to learn I can't rely on it. (Don't tell me I didn't try!) I'm sorry I need to continue my search for other software as I really liked MoneyDance.

"Moneydance has almost all of the needed capabilities"

Version: Moneydance 2010r3
ProsFaster in showing analysis, assuming what is shown works for youInitial use seems to indicate few requirements to conform
Conslocation of backup files and means to back up are limited to Windows defaults
SummaryGood backup for the most prevalent non business application when it finally does an upgrade that prevents using personal archives.

"Non Intuitive, and Extremely Complicated w Poor Support"
March 16, 2013

Version: Moneydance 2010r3
ProsNothing of note, paid more for this program than most of their competition and got burned by a very difficult program and company to work with. Not good for personal financial management.
ConsNon intuitive, terrible customer support w/ no chat or live dial in support, there's not a startup guide to walk you through setting up your accounts. To connect to your bank you need to tell them to mimic QuickBooks setup, which in itself describes the small time program you're dealing with. I work in the software industry and couldn't get the program to work after two weeks of effort and reading all of their support documentation. I was looking for a personal financial software that worked on a Mac, and this seemed to fit the bill until I unfortunately spent my $50 on the download and could never get it to connect to my accounts.
SummaryI would highly recommend not getting near this program if you are looking for a software program to manage your personal finances. If you want a program that is intuitive and walks your through the setup process this by no means is the program you should be seeking.

"On the Surface great alternative to M/S Money"

Version: Moneydance 2010r3
ProsAfter using the software for about 3 months now I find it very easy to navigate. Adding/deleting accounts and reminders is very simple once you play with it for awhile. However, there are bugs which MD refuses or is incapable of dealing with.
ConsThe downloaded software gives you 100 free transactions before you have to buy it. Had I gone through all of them, I would not have bought the software. M/S Money, though stale and through with updates, at least would allow me to transfer funds between accounts using only one transaction. M/D will not, and according to their support staff, their code designers have no intention of making this change. There are a whole lot of unhappy subscribers that wish to be able to move positions between brokerage accounts. Can't do it. Must make multiple transactions. One from one account, and another to a different account. MD's apparent refusal to deal with this problem is strange to say the least. This has to be just a simple process of inserting a line of code in the matrix.
SummaryWon't be suggesting anyone else buy the software unless/until Moneydance starts listening to their customers.

Version: Moneydance 2010r3
ProsSimple to use. Great selection of reports. Runs on Window Linux and Mac. Just makes my life easier.
ConsDoesn't connect to all banks but that doesn't matter so much as I can always download the transaction file from the banks website and import it.

"Best quality, best value for money"

Version: Moneydance 2010r3
Prosclean, consistent interface, auto transaction, exchange-rate and stock-price update capabilities, investment and assets, intuitive to use, configurable reports and graphs, homepage gives good overview of financial and budget status. multi-platform.
Conscurrent version has a bug which makes investment accounts in anything other than your base currency work incorrectly. bug has been present for at least a year. not a problem for most, show-stopper if you need to track stocks in another currency.
Summaryi am very impressed with this program and would definitely recommend it. i'd buy it again if given the choice. it is far superior to quicken, acemoney and account xpress, all of which i tested extensively before settling on moneydance. the free version gives you enough to be able to test it, and the full version only costs 31.99 after applying the 20% discount code (you can get the 20% discount code by signing on to facebook, searching for the moneydance page, then clicking "Like"). This program is definitely worth the price - nothing in it's price-range has capabilities like these, and if you're trying to get a handle on your budget and lower your expenses then this will give you more insight than the free programs and thereby earn back far more than its price-tag. in my first week i was able to identify ways to lower my monthly budget by hundreds.

"Awesome Money Replacement"
July 17, 2010

Version: Moneydance 2010r3
ProsWay easier to use than Microsoft Money. Allows me to have control of my data.
ConsNothing Yet
SummaryI have been using Moneydance 2010 for several months, and it is awesome! I had to migrate from Microsoft Money because they are no longer supporting it, and had been looking for a replacement. I did quite a bit of research and finally settled on Moneydance. It is way easier to use than Money, and the developers are very active constantly improving the product. The support is great as well. They have been in business for years, and I think this product will be one of the premium personal finance products. Does investment tracking, budgeting, etc. and allows me to keep my data in-house. I don't trust online services with my data. What if they go bust!
