Please make sure you are using the latest version of your PaperScan edition: http://www.orpalis.com/products/paperscan/paperscan-free.php
And the latest TWAIN driver's version of your device.
And everything will be fine :-)

ProsVersion 1.5 is 10,000,000x better stick with it. It at least scans in color.
ConsWhy did you take away the color scanning. My version 1.5 did everything right including color.
SummaryFind the 1.5 version and use it. The new and improved version 1.8 took away the color feature.

Umm...not sure what the original viewer is doing wrong but I just downloaded the latest version and was able to scan in color without any issues. Maybe he's simply using the quick scan feature which does scan in black and white. However, if you use the Scan Wizard you can select to scan in color and make a host of other adjustments.

I just downloaded version 2.0.1 which scanned black and white as the default. I was able to change to color mode using the scan wizard.

Dear Jerry Gibson,As our technical staff already explained: your assertion is wrong.We have never removed color support, this would have been a total nonsense... Obviously you are doing something wrong. I would have hoped that, as a notary, you would have the etiquette to check this affirmation before defaming our products on different public places...We do a lot of efforts to develop, maintain and support for free this Software edition. Please try to take it into consideration!The *disappointed* editor.

"OCR and PDF Are Only Available If You Pay $149"

ProsNone—since the only reason you would want software like this is for saving OCR scanned documents as EDITABLE PDFs.This is NOT free software. The most important features are locked unless you spend $149 for the full version.PaperScan should, at the least, listed as free to try; but then again you can't even test the OCR capabilities if you wanted to.
ConsWorthless—unless you pay $149 for full version. But then again, I don't even know if the full version works since I can't test it.

We actually have three editions of PaperScan: Free, Home (for everyday use) and Professional.
As mentioned, the free edition is quite limited as it is a Fee edition not a trial!
However, you can totally try our Home or Professional editions for free for 30 days and, yes, you can test the OCR capabilities too ;-)

ProsIt works with WIA and TWAIN scanners. I used WIA for my quick evaluation. I like ability to set color-mode, paper-size and resolution one time only, and thereby more rapidly scan multiple pages.Freeware similar to two commercial versions: a Home Edition & Professional Version. The Home Edition is free to students. I encourage students to evaluate this app (this app has document management tools superior to my version of Adobe Acrobat).During my brief search I found several freeware apps -- all inferior to PaperScan (FreeScanner, DeskScan, iCarbon, PaperArchiver and iCopy).
ConsThe only bugs I found were with the file save (or perhaps save-as) commands, however I quickly learned how to work around these bugs.
SummaryOn 1/13/2012 I spent several hours searching for a good freeware "General Purpose" Scanner Application, where "General Purpose" means that it works with all WIA and/or TWAIN scanners. I wanted software to replace the poor software that came with my HP 4470c Scanjet (purchased several years ago).I found this excellent freeware application. It works with WIA and TWAIN scanners (I use the WIA option). It is a limited version of a commercial application, which often results in a good and reliable application. What I like is the ability to set the color-mode, paper-size and resolution one time only, and thereby more rapidly scan multiple documents. The only bugs I found were with the file save commands, however I quickly learned quickly how to work around these bugs.It is similar to their two commercial versions: a Home Edition and Professional Version. The Home Edition, which permits scanning to a multi-page document is free to students. I would encourage students to evaluate this application, because PaperScan also includes many document management tools that are actually superior to those found in my version of Adobe Acrobat (Version 8 Standard). During my relatively brief search I found several freeware applications, however none of these applications can compare to PaperScan, matter-of-fact I deleted all of them because of their limitations and/or defects which for me rendered them useless. These other applications: FreeScanner, DeskScan, iCarbon, PaperArchiver and iCopy. I was also often directed to Free Kapture 2.0, but I wasn't able to download and test it. There are also other applications that I unwantedly discovered while looking for freeware that are actually trialware, e.g., Scan2PDF, etc. As such I was very glad to find PaperScan. To overcome inability to create a multipage document (a freeware limitation) you can use pdfsam (PDF Split And Merge Basic) to merge results (an open-source freeware application).

SummaryI suddenly could no longer scan documents with my Canon LaserBase MF5730 bought back in 2006, using the Canon MFToolbox which comes with the MF device. I downloaded from CNET Krystal Capture Studio and mdss. Krystal Capture Studio did not install, mdss did not run. So I tried PaperScan 1.1.02 Free Edition. It just runs beautifully.

ProsSeemed easy enough to set up and scan my first 10 pages that I wanted as a single document, but would not allow me to save that way. See Cons.
ConsFYI - This demo version doesn't allow you to save a multiple page document. All single pages.

ProsInstalled easily and had a simple interface. I wasn't able to try any of it's features. It may work on a newer scanner....? It's worth trying if your software is no longer supported.
ConsDidn't work on Windows 7 64 bit system for my older Epson scanner using the Twain 5 driver. This scanner plugs into a USB port. ORPALIS claims to control any scanner.

Hello,
First of all, you can not ask to a scanning software to work flawlessly if you're not making sure that you're using the latest version of your edition and the latest TWAIN driver's version of your device (available on your device brand's website).
Those are the first steps when you download PaperScan.
Don't forget that your driver's device may play a role into your issue.
Let's say that it's a "three-way dance" where your OS, your driver's device and PaperScan play a role.
If one of them is deficient, it can't work!

We also explain how to find a solution.
So, yes, we do our best to help with scanner's issues.
