Replace search for files and folders module in Windows with different application.
SearchMyFiles is an alternative to the standard "search for files and folders" module of Windows. It allows you to easily search files in your system by wildcard, by last modified, created, or last accessed time, by file attributes, by file content (text or binary search), and by the file size. SearchMyFiles allows you to make a very accurate search that cannot be done with Windows search. For Example: You can search all files created in the last 10 minutes with size between 500 and 700 bytes. After you made a search, you can select one or more files, and save the list into text, HTML, CSV, or XML file, or copy the list to the clipboard. SearchMyFiles is portable, and you can use it from a USB flash drive without leaving traces in the Registry of the scanned computer.

doing they would have this.
ConsIt this is too complicated for you then maybe you
should stick with your etch-a-sketch.

ProsFast, runs from exe file without requiring install, finds duplicate files. Flexible options about searching multiple paths, excluding multiple paths, including and excluding multiple file name patterns, including and excluding multiple text patterns. Also times created/modified/accessed by seconds, minutes, hours, days, months. Also attributes such as readonly / hidden / compressed / system or not. Of course limits on file size. The search for duplicates was eye-opening, finding 1454 files that appear 6454 times, an average of about 4 duplicates each.
ConsThe help file is separate. Clicking on the "help" in the program just shows the "about" information. Clicking on the separate chm help file describes how each of the options works.

ProsIt finds duplicate files.
ConsI downloaded it from the developer web site and was hit with a wave of spy ware, mal ware, a trojan a browser hijacker and God knows what else. That is why it is free. Down load from the link on this page and none of that happens. I found the program to work great finding files. But there is no help file. This is only for techies.

ProsMicrosoft has decided to make searching files even less intuitive in Windows 7. Luckily this utility is around to fill in the gaping hole Microsoft created.

ProsProvides all the search criteria I would ever want.Does not interfere with the registry.Includes a duplicate file-finder option which is the best and fastest I have seen.It's FREE!
ConsThe options screen may be somewhat overwhelming for novices.No help file, which could be a problem for novice users.
SummaryThe interface may not be everyone's cup of tea, but to me it is wonderful to have all the options available for the odd times you may need them.For those with thousands of files not very well organised, the "Dupllicates Search" option will be a God-send. For the more experienced users, this is a fast and efficient no-nonsense utility which does what it should, and well worth adding to your inventory. Highly recommended.

ProsThe default Windows 7 search sucks. Probably Microsoft thought that they were simplifying search for morons. But if you want to search like in old Windows 98, and even more powerful, this is the right tool.
